Classroom

Bowen has been named to the Dean’s List every semester and is a two-time MAAC All-Academic Team selection.  In addition, she earned a place on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Team.  Bowen was also named MAAC Student-Athlete of the Week on May 13, 2013.  She’s a member of the Epsilon Sigma Pi, Phi Epsilon Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi honor societies, and was selected as the Manhattan Physical Education Department’s Major of the Year in 2013.

Character

A native of Newtown, Conn., Bowen organized a “Sandy Hook Dedication Game” after the tragedy in her hometown.  The Jaspers wore special jerseys for the doubleheader and sold t-shirts with the number 26 (one for each victim) on the back, with the proceeds benefitting the 26 Angels Foundation, which was started by a Sandy Hook survivor to assist residents of the Newtown community.  Sandy Hook students, some of whom were coached by Bowen, ran out onto the field with the Jaspers during pregame lineups.  Following the national anthem, both teams and the Sandy Hook students formed a circle for a 26-second moment of silence.  Three Sandy Hook third graders, all of whom were survivors, then each threw out a ceremonial first pitch.  Bowen started and won the first game of the doubleheader, which Manhattan swept.  She’s planning on organizing another Sandy Hook Dedication Game for this season.

Community

An active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she’s also a team captain.  Bowen is also a member of the New York Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYAHPERD), and she was a finalist for NYAHPERD Future Professionals Student President.  Bowen has served as both a presenter, presider and panelist at the NYAHPERD conference, and she was a speaker at Manhattan’s National Girls and Women In Sports Day in February 2013.  Bowen has also worked as a student leader at Mahattan’s Freshman Extended Orientation program, and has helped organize the Manhattan College Games.  In addition, she organized a free softball clinic for local Bronx elementary schools and has taught and coached with several youth softball teams.

Competition

Bowen was chosen as Manhattan’s 2012-13 Female Student-Athlete of the Year while also earning First Team All-MAAC recognition last season.  She led the team in batting average (.367), hits (61), doubles (12) and runs scored (34), while ranking second on the squad in home runs (6) and RBIs (33).  She also paced the pitching staff in wins (9), complete games (10), innings pitched (106.2) and ERA (3.81).  In 2012, Bowen was named First Team All-Northeast Region, as well as Second Team All-MAAC.  She paced the team in most offensive categories, while also leading the squad in ERA and innings pitched.  Bowen was chosen as MAAC Player of the Week on May 7, 2012 after belting a walk-off grand slam and pitching an eight-inning, two-hit shutout in a win over Fairfield.  As a freshman, she helped Manhattan qualify for the MAAC Tournament by posting a team-best .336 batting average to go along with team-highs in hits (40) and RBIs (25).  Bowen enters her senior season tied for seventh all-time at Manhattan in home runs, while also ranking eighth all-time in RBIs.
