An outstanding student, Lauren Moore is a biology major with a minor in neuroscience. Through the fall 2016 semester, she is carrying a 3.95 grade-point average, including an impressive 4.0 GPA in her major.

A dean’s list honoree in every semester of her college career, Moore is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, the Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society and the Alpha Epsilon Delta National Pre-Health Honor Society. In addition, Moore was the recipient of the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society Scholarship in 2016 and also received the UNCW Department of Athletics’ Soaring Seahawk Award in 2016 and was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association’s All-Academic Team in 2016.

Moore is currently researching two major areas of interest: neurofeedback on the elderly population and neural locomotive control of jellyfish using immunohistochemistry. Following graduation, she aspires to attend medical school with the hopes of becoming a surgeon.

Character

A two-time captain of the UNCW softball team, Moore is currently serving as president of the UNCW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the second straight year. She is the co-founder and president of Colleges Against Cancer and as treasurer for Alpha Epsilon Delta. Moore works with the CARE Office at UNCW, serving as a My Stand Mentor and is a member of the Senior Class Giving Campaign Committee.

When asked about overcoming obstacles, Moore said, “I think my biggest obstacle is overcoming my mother’s passing. After that, I felt like my world had stopped. However, I discovered that you can either let tragedy bring you down in life, or you can use tragedy as a source of strength and growth. My favorite quote is ‘You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice.’”

Community

Moore is heavily involved in the Wilmington community and leads the Seahawks’ volunteer efforts, which is a major pillar of the softball program. She has volunteered at numerous places, including the Miracle League of Wilmington and Cape Fear Optimist Club. She also spent time working with the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Toast to Life Gala in 2016, which helped to raise money for MDA’s summer camp program.

In addition, Moore has worked with the American Red Cross over the last two years to organize the UNCW Department of Athletics’ annual Blood Drive as part of the CAA Blood Drive Challenge. But, the items that Moore is most proud of when it comes to community involvement are the two volleyball tournaments she has organized to help raise money for breast cancer awareness. In high school, she organized and started an indoor volleyball tournament for breast cancer awareness just three months after her mother’s passing. The tournament has raised $47,000 in seven years for the Service League of Greenville Hospice Center.

Moore also was the driving force behind the creation of a beach volleyball tournament in Wilmington called #FightBack for Breast Cancer Awareness. In two years of the tournament, nearly $5,000 has been raised for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Pink Ribbon Project at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Competition

Moore is a three-year letter winner for the Seahawks who started 128-of-136 games in her college career. Entering the 2017 campaign, she had tallied 70 hits in her career, including 11 doubles, one triple and three home runs, while driving in 28 runs. As a junior, she started 35 of 41 games and posted a .966 fielding percentage while batting .239 with two home runs and 17 runs batted in. After starting all 52 games as a freshman, the Greenville, N.C., product was a starter in 41 of 43 games in 2015 and recorded a .954 fielding percentage while accumulating 20 hits with 12 runs scored.
