Luke Matthews currently holds a 3.442 cumulative GPA as a sport and event management major. He has made the athletic director’s honor roll every semester of his career and the dean’s list four times out of seven semesters.

Character

Matthews has served as a captain for the Phoenix the past two seasons. As told by Elon Head Coach Marc Reeves: “Luke has a strong ability to work within a group and the confidence to step up and be a leader in a variety of situations. A clear example of this is when Luke was selected by his peers as our team captain as only a sophomore. Luke is quiet-natured but possesses quality communication skills and has a great ability to interact, and relay and present information clearly to any audience.”

Community

Matthews has led the program’s community service efforts the past two years including the team’s work with the local TOPSoccer Outreach Program for young athletes with disabilities. Matthews leads and organizes all aspect of this program from designing the curriculum, staffing and ensuring each session provides a fantastic environment for these young athletes to enjoy.

Added from Head Coach Marc Reeves: “Luke is highly active on campus and in the community with activities that benefit both Elon and the surrounding area. Luke has a sincere desire to help others and do what is needed to most benefit all around him. He is always the first to volunteer for any service project we may partake in such as Special Olympics, Mentor Reading, CHAMPS, etc.”

Matthews also works to give back to his hometown community in Swindon, England. He has served as a community coach with the Swindon Town Soccer in the community organization.

Competition

Matthews has started every game of his career he has appeared in, earned first-team All-CAA accolades in 2018 and was a 2019 Preseason All-CAA selection. He earned a spot on the CAA All-Rookie Team in 2016 and was named the squad’s team MVP for 2018. Matthews also was an NCCSIA All-State choice in 2018 and was named to the second-team All-CAA squad as a sophomore in 2017.
