Matt Borges has a 3.151 grade-point average as a finance major. He is a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Character

Borges was selected by his teammates to serve as a captain for the 2019 season. He is a member of Ohio State’s Leadership Council, which is charged with setting the tone for this year’s Buckeyes in everything that they do on and off the field, in the classroom and in the community. Members were voted on to the Leadership Council by their peers, and Borges has been a member of the Leadership Council for multiple seasons.

Community

Borges is active with a number of organizations in and around the Columbus area, including the 2nd and Seven Foundation through which he has volunteered multiple times to read to second-graders. He volunteered with the High School PE Teaching Clinic where he taught the PE teachers of Columbus Public City Schools lacrosse skills/mini games to incorporate into their gym classes. He has visited the Columbus Veteran’s Ambulatory Care Center to thank veterans for their service and participated in Ohio State’s Thank U Thon by calling Ohio State donors to thank them for their financial support. Additionally, Borges has gotten involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio where he has helped at the house with ad hoc projects such as cleaning, building shelves, taking down Christmas decorations and more.

Competition

Borges is entering his third season as a full-time starter at close defense in 2018. He is a veteran of 51 career games with 36 straight starts, and he has helped Ohio State lead the Big Ten in goals-against average for two consecutive seasons. He was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on March 6, 2018, after picking up 10 ground balls and causing five turnovers in games vs. Marquette and Detroit. He was part of an Ohio State defense that ranked 11th nationally in goals-against average in 2017 as the team made its first-ever appearance in the Final Four. During the summer of 2016, Borges won a gold medal for Team USA at the U-19 World Championship. He was named the team’s Most Outstanding Freshman in 2016.
