Mike Malave is the epitome of a student-athlete. Carrying a 3.45 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in finance, Malave is a three-time Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner’s Academic Award recipient for student-athletes who achieve a cumulative 3.25 or better grade-point average. He is also a three-time Hofstra Athletics Academic Honor Roll member for student-athletes who achieve a 3.0 GPA or better. Malave is a two-time Dean’s List student and is also a recipient of the Hofstra Presidential Scholarship

Character

Malave was selected to serve as one of the four team captains in 2014-15 for the Hofstra Pride. In his role, he is responsible for organizing formal and informal meetings to open and improve communications among team members while providing leadership to more than 45 players. He is an honest, personable and helpful person both on and off the field.

Malave has also served as a tutor in the Hofstra Tutorial Program last year. In that role he has assisted students looking to better their understanding in introductory-level business courses. He also communicated with tutees and coordinated weekly schedules. He is a hard-working young man who completed a financial professional associate internship with Prudential Financial in Uniondale, New York, last summer. He also served as head of coaching for Team Revolution Lacrosse, helping youth improve their skills and stressing teamwork and sportsmanship while creating a fun and memorable experience.

Community

In addition to his duties with Team Revolution Lacrosse, Malave has been a leader on the Hofstra team in community service and charitable team activities. This year alone, he has been actively involved in helping to organize several events including the Pride’s involvement in the Firefighter Stephen Siller Foundation Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk. He and his teammates were also involved in the Long Island Holiday Magic Toy Drive for Homeless Children, bringing gifts, wrapping gifts and serving as Santa’s helpers. Malave also assisted in charity events for Friends of Jaclyn little buddy Dylan Beach. Malave and his teammates also made a goodwill trip and played wheelchair basketball with the clients at the Viscardi Center in Albertson, New York, for people with disabilities and has been involved in clothing drives for the homeless and needy.

Competition

Malave has played in 42 games during his three-year Hofstra lacrosse career starting 37. Each season, he has increased his offensive productivity from nine goals and two assists as a freshman to 26 goals and seven assists as a junior in 2014. He was third on the Hofstra team and ninth in the CAA in goals per game. He earned CAA All-Rookie Team honors in 2012 and was named to the CAA All-Championship Team in 2014 while helping the Pride to the CAA regular season title and an appearance in the conference championship game. He was also voted to the 2015 Preseason All-CAA Team by the conference coaches.
