Classroom

At CSUB, Oscar has been on the dean’s list all three years of college with a overall GPA of 3.22. A finance major, Oscar has overloaded the fall quarter and winter quarter of the 2013-14 academic year in order to graduate in June of 2014.

Oscar would like to open his own baseball academy or facility using his degree. Baseball has been part of Oscar’s life ever since he could remember, so he cannot imagine life without it.  He would like to take his experiences and teach youth life skills they will need as they get older in order make them better human beings before they are better ball players.

He would also like to open his own facility to help the less fortunate. Oscar knew the feeling of not having the proper equipment or facilities as well as what the lack of proper training feels like. He feels that there many kids, especially in his family’s native Mexico, that have the drive and passion to do something with their lives but just don’t have the opportunity. He hopes to raise enough money to get to this point someday.

Character

Oscar has always led by example when it came to baseball because that is just what he has learned from experience. He has never been the one to be a vocal leader up until this year because that is just how he was raised.

He was always told to put your head down and go to work. Regardless of a good game or bad game, he was always taught to stay at an even keel. This season, he has been asked to be more vocal because of his status and seniority over the rest of the team.

He hasn’t felt that it has been a perfect situation, but everything he has said has been the truth that he has I seen and personally experienced.

One of the biggest obstacles that Oscar has overcome was coming back from shoulder surgery on his throwing arm. The arm was first injured in the fall of his senior year of high school but grew worse by February.  To go from playing every day of your life to not being able to leave the house for awhile was mentally draining for Oscar. With clearance from both the surgeon and CSUB trainer, Oscar started Fall practice on schedule.

Community

As part of the Roadrunner program, Oscar has participated in multiple neighborhood cleanups in the city of Bakersfield as part of the yearly Martin Luther King Jr. event.

As part of the ‘Runner program, Oscar has also been a part of multiple “Feed the Families of Bakersfield” during Christmas time. He has also done multiple baseball camps with CSUB as well as with his Summer ball teams. He has also done a YMCA event in downtown Bakersfield with some of his teammates.
