In an extremely challenging year for most, it meant so much for us to honor all of the special seniors during the 2020-21 academic school year - even more so because last year was incomplete. We knew there would need to be a change to our program with student-athletes being granted the option of an additional year of eligibility, and we welcomed the opportunity to be proactive. We encouraged all senior student-athletes, who would have normally exhausted their eligibility at the conclusion of this… Continue Reading Matt Gasper

The Senior CLASS Award has proudly honored the nation’s top senior student-athletes for 18 years. We’ve presented awards to many amazing young stars, some of which have gone on to professional sports careers and others who have been just as successful pursuing other paths in life.

The award launched in 2002 with the inspiring story of Shane Battier, the urging of the late, great Dick Enberg and a group of executives who moved forward with the idea. It has grown immensely into… Continue Reading Jill Lee

Every spring when the academic year comes to a close, we get a chance to look back on the “year that was” in the world of the Senior CLASS Award (SCA). It’s always inspiring to remember the student-athletes who were honored and recall what they’d done to deserve the honor.

This year was certainly one to remember for the SCA staff, as it featured several firsts in award history. We saw our first set of twins make it to the round of finalists when Minnesota volleyball stars Paige… Continue Reading Laurie Bollig

Jewell and McDuff experienced life as student-athletes in uniquely different ways

by Laurie Bollig December 10, 2012 in Men’s Soccer,

When it came to selecting a college at which to play soccer, Tishia Jewell and Ryan McDuff couldn’t have chosen more divergent paths.

Jewell, a Satellite Beach, Fla., native, chose to stay close to home, enrolling at the University of Central Florida in Orlando – the ultimate American tourist destination. UCF boasts an enrollment of 60,000. McDuff, who grew up in Plano, Tex., decided to move 2,000 miles away, choosing to attend Brown University in Rhode Island – geographically, the… Continue Reading Michael Lewis

Returning the favor is important to Coastal Carolina’s Bennett

by Michael Lewis October 08, 2012 in Men’s Soccer,

In January, Ashton Bennett had a giant carrot being dangled in front of him as he was being touted as a possible top 10 pick in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

While rookies certainly don’t make millions in pro soccer in the United States, getting an opportunity to pursue a career in an avocation that you love can be enticing.

But there was only one slight problem—the Jamaican native would have had to give up his senior year at Coastal Carolina University,… Continue Reading Michael Lewis

Holt states his case for a successful career

by Michael Lewis December 18, 2011 in Men’s Soccer,

As a goalkeeper who is all of 5-foot-8, Creighton University senior Brian Holt has heard the talk that he was too small to be a goalkeeper.

Yet, he has managed to stand tall in the net and off the pitch in more ways than one.

Holt wound up as one of four NCAA Division I goalkeepers still standing as Creighton earned a spot in the NCAA Men’s College Cup in Hoover, Ala. So, given his play and leadership on the field, and focus, classroom and volunteer work off it, it was not… Continue Reading
