Abdi Mohamed maintains a 3.278 GPA in sport management after transferring to Akron from Ohio State for his senior season. While at Ohio State he was twice named an Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Character

Mohamed is an extremely intelligent, articulate and responsive student-athlete who has taken quickly to his new surroundings to become a team leader on and off the field. His word has been his bond, and he has made his transition easy for everyone who interacts with him within the department and in the community.

Community

Growing up, Mohamed’s parents placed him in a weekend Quran school at the local mosque where he learned how to read, write and partake in Quran studies. After completing this program (around his junior year of high school), he went back and volunteered at the mosque doing things such as teaching, fundraising for Somalia drought victims, doing clerical work in the Mosque, etc. He continues to volunteer during the summers as his class and soccer schedules allow.

Competition

In his first season at Akron, Mohamed had started each of the Zips’ contests as of nomination time and owned an assist on three shots, including one on goal. He came to Akron after spending the past three years as a member of the men’s soccer team at Ohio State, where he started all 19 games in 2017 for the Buckeyes registering team-high marks in goals (4), assists (5), points (13), shots (40), shots on goal (15) and game-winners (3) en route to earning second-team All-Big Ten accolades and was named a United Soccer Coaches Great Lakes Region Third Team and All-Ohio First Team honoree and a Big Ten Tournament All-Tournament selection. He previously was selected as a second-team All-Big Ten honoree in 2016 and an all-freshman team member in 2015.
