Alex Akins

University of Detroit Mercy


Akins has received many accolades during his academic career, including USILA Scholar All-American honors in 2020.

He has also been a three-time MAAC All-Academic team, four-time MAAC Academic Honor Roll, and four-time Detroit Mercy Athletic Director’s Honor Roll selection.


Akins, a three-time team captain, is the main leader of the Detroit Mercy defense.


Akins is a member of the Detroit Mercy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

He has also taken part in school and team community service projects, such as Halloween for Kids Cancer and freshman move-in days.


Akins is a two-time All-MAAC second team selection (2017 and 2019) and also earned first team honors in 2018.

He earned two MAAC All-Tournament team honors (2017 and 2018), as well as MAAC All-Rookie team during his freshman campaign in 2017.

Akins currently ranks sixth in school history with 44 caused turnovers. He has helped the team post consecutive winning seasons for the first time in program history, with a school record nine wins in 2018. During that campaign, Detroit Mercy also earned a birth to the MAAC Championship game.
