Classroom

Alex Comsia has been a standout in the classroom from the first day he stepped on campus in Chapel Hill. A three-time All-ACC Academic selection, he was honored as a 2018 top-10 Scholar-Athlete, which honors the 10 graduating senior student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade-point averages. A former NCAA Elite 90 award recipient (highest GPA at the Men’s College Cup) in 2017, Comsia also has been a recipient of the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which goes to one male and one female at each conference school. During the 2016 campaign he was named an Academic All-American which he followed up by being named a Division-I Scholar All-American in 2017. A rising star in the Richard A. Baddour Carolina Leadership Academy, Comsia is a business administration major in the esteemed Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Character

Comsia is a standout on the field and in the classroom, but how he treats others and interacts with other student-athletes and classmates around campus is what makes him stand out. There isn’t a person Alex doesn’t meet who doesn’t instantly feel welcomed and accepted. Comsia continually goes out of his way for his teammates and others as he strives to lead by example and leave Chapel Hill a better place. He has great relationships with his teammates and can be found outside the soccer field spending time diving in to other areas of college life that many athletes don’t take advantage of. When recruiting players to build a program, he is the kind of student-athlete around whom a coach would want to build the team. He’s someone who does things the right way and has high moral and ethical standards that set him apart. Comsia not only represents the men’s soccer program well, but also the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a whole.

Community

Comsia is one of the most active student-athletes at Carolina when it comes to community involvement. He is the men’s soccer representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is also an active participant in the Carolina Leadership Academy while being enrolled in the highest level of programming. He has been a recipient of the Tar Heel Leader of Distinction Award, which is the Carolina Leadership Academy’s highest honor. Comsia has also partnered with the men’s soccer team in the Share Your Holiday program through which the Tar Heel teams bought Christmas gifts for local children. Most recently, Comsia joined fellow Tar Heel student-athletes in welcoming local elementary students back to school by surprising them when they got off the bus on their first day.

Competition

Comsia has been a four-year starter for the Tar Heels, helping lead the team to back-to-back College Cups during his sophomore and junior seasons. A member of the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List during his senior campaign, Comsia has been selected as the captain of the 2018 Tar Heels as a defensive standout. He has started every game for the Tar Heels on defense over the last two seasons while being named an All-ACC selection during his junior season and leading the team in minutes played. Coming in to the 2018 season, Comsia was ranked No. 43 in the TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Top 100 list. As a freshman, Comsia was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team after starting 13 games and making 18 appearances.
