Classroom

Throughout her career at UNI, academics have always been Brees’s number one priority.  She takes pride in her grades and has achieved a 3.93 cumulative GPA.  In 2012, she was named a first-team MVC Scholar-Athlete.  She was named to the President’s List in 2011 and 2012 as well as the Dean’s List for all remaining semesters.  She is on track to graduate in May 2014 with a degree in Health and Fitness Promotion and a minor in general business concepts.  She has an interest in working with children and conquering childhood obesity.  Upon graduation, she plans to work with groups or individuals who are interested in improving their health through implementing proper eating habits and living an active lifestyle.

Character

Brees has been a captain of the UNI soccer team since the end of her sophomore season.  She tries her best to set an example and be a positive role model at all times for the rest of her teammates.  When she came to UNI, the women’s soccer program was 2-11-3 with zero conference wins.  Over the past three years, the program has overcome many obstacles.  Last season the team set school records for most wins in a season, most consecutive wins in a season, and for the first time in school history we were able to host the first round of the MVC tournament.  The team’s overall record was 8-9-2 with a conference record of 3-2-2.  As a team captain, she is very proud of the progress the team has made.

Community

Brees has been involved in many community and charitable activities throughout her time at UNI.  She led a team of 25 students to help collect bars of soap for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.  In total, they collected over 1,500 bars of soap to donate to the food bank.  She led this process by developing a flyer to raise awareness of the food bank’s need for soap.  She also volunteers at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank by helping stock their shelves and put together food sacks for those in need.  She worked with an after-school boys and girls club program at a local elementary school.  She taught the kids facts about nutrition and implemented games to help them learn these skills while being active.  During the past 3 Decembers, she volunteered at the Salvation Army with the team to help organize all of the Christmas donations that will be given to children in need.  Lastly, the soccer program is heavily involved with the local soccer club and helps coach and run camps for young soccer players.

Competition

As a sophomore in 2011, Brees played in 21 games.  During this season, she was part of a defense that recorded seven shutouts and allowed one goal or less 12 times.  Although she is a defender, she was able to score two goals proving her versatility.  In 2012, she started 15 games; her season was interrupted due to a concussion.  Although it was a shortened season, she was still named to the SIU-E All-tournament team, named MVC Defensive Player of the Week (Aug. 28), and named 2nd team All-MVC. As stated above, last season she was able to play a significant role in the team’s ability to set two school records and host the first round of the conference tournament for the first time in school history.
