Classroom

Andy has a 3.112 grade-point-average with a major in business management.  He will have completed 110 of 120 hours toward his degree after this semester.  If professional baseball does not work out for Andy, he would like to use his degree and get a job in the business world.

Character

One of the three captains this season, Andy has been the leader in terms of getting a new attitude this season.  Coastal struggled to a 30-27 season in 2006, but the Chanticleers are currently ranked in the top 20 in the nation.  Andy always has a positive outlook on the situation, even last year when he struggled at the beginning of the season.  He had a good second half of the year and now is one of the best pitchers in the country in terms of wins and earned-run average.  He has played a key role on the team ever since his freshman season and knows what to tell the young guys on the team what it takes to win in the Coastal program.

Community

Andy and the rest of the Coastal baseball team have a big involvement in the community.  This past fall, Coastal had helped with the Grand Strand Miracle League, attending every game and serving as “Buddies” for the Miracle League kids.  They assisted with all the aspects of the game and grew a friendship with the near 80 children that participated.  Andy also has had involvement with the North Myrtle Beach Little League clinics, talking to the kids about hard work and education.

Competition

Andy has had a breakout season in 2007.  DeLaGarza leads the Big South in both wins (7-0) and earned-run average (1.37).  In 52.2 innings pitched, Andy has struck out 31 batters while walking only eight.  He has been our number one pitcher, starting our first eight Friday night games.  For his career, Andy has a 18-12 record with a 3.72 ERA and 181 strikeouts.  Also, Coastal Carolina has had its best start in the program’s history with a 27-3 record and currently have a 15-game winning streak, the longest current streak in the nation.
