Classroom

Callan Elswick is a two-time All-Southern Conference Academic Team member. She is applying to medical school with the goal of becoming a doctor who serves the Latino migrant population in the U.S. She served an internship this summer at the Campaign for Migrant Worker Justice (CMWJ) and Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). As a Latino Studies major, she is writing her thesis on the unionization of Latino migrant workers and their access to health care. This past spring, Elswick studied abroad doing an internship at Movimiento M-33, Cuernavaca, Mexico. The Premedical Advisory Committee at Davidson College awarded her the Daniel Blain Woods Memorial Award for exhibiting the qualities needed by a good doctor: wisdom, compassion, the desire to serve, the ability to analyze problems, integrity, academic excellence and an empathetic heart.

Character

Elswick will be a team captain this year in her final season. According to head coach Greg Ashton, “she has a great attitude toward the game and is able to play in a number of positions. Her speed and endurance adds to our attacking capabilities in the midfield and possibly up front.”

Community

Elswick observed at the 198 Youth Health Centre, Christchurch, New Zealand. She traveled to the Mwandi Mission Hospital in Zambia as part of the Davidson in Mwandi Program in order to observe the medical staff, give immunizations at outreach clinics, aid in a variety of community service projects, and participate in antiretroviral therapy counseling sessions. Elswick also volunteers at Serenity House, the Mooresville HealthReach Clinic, First Responders and Adopt a Grandparent. She also served an internship at the Pan American Health Organization.

Competition

Elswick helped guide the Davidson women’s soccer to the program’s first NCAA Tournament in 2009. She was voted the team’s Most Improved (2008), the Class of 1986 Award (2009), the Southern Conference Academic All-Conference Team (2007-2009) and the COSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Team – University Division, Third Team (2009). She had a career junior season with 2 goals and 3 assists, starting career-high 16 games.
