Cassius Winston was an Academic All-Big Ten selection as a junior in 2018-19. Winston earned his bachelor’s degree in advertising and management in three years and began work on a master’s degree in the Summer 2019.
Character
A two-time team captain, Winston has developed into one of the leading voices for one of the top teams in the country.
Community
Winston takes part in the Miracle League of Mid-Michigan Accessible Trick or Treat at a local hospital each year. He has participated in Habitat Thru Humanity with the MSU Athletics and is an activist for heart screenings for students at the Heilmann Community Center in Detroit.
Competition
Winston was named the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2019. He was a First Team All-American by the Associated Press and the Sporting News. He was a Second Team All-American by the NCAA (consensus), the United States Basketball Writers Association, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of both the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Tournament East Regional. Winston is just the second player in Michigan State history to win the Big Ten Player of the Year, Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Regional Most Outstanding Player and receive First-Team All-America honors in the same season. He was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten First Team and was selected to the John R. Wooden Award All-American Team, along with being one of five finalists for the Wooden Award Trophy. He was a finalist for the Naismith Trophy and the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, while being named the USBWA District Five Player of the Year. Cassius was named the MSU MVP by both the team and media.
