Jacob Gilyard

Rhetoric and Communication Studies

Gilyard has already graduated from Richmond, earning his degree in rhetoric and communication studies.

He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in human resources management.

Gilyard enters his fifth year as a team leader for the Spiders.

He has been a starter since stepping foot on campus and has led the team through tough stretches with unwavering dedication and commitment. Gilyard is humble, helpful, and hard-working.

Gilyard, whose younger brother Roman is autistic, is actively involved in the fight against the disorder. His family has informally coined their efforts as “Roman’s Army,” a phrase that he writes on his shoes before each game.

Richmond has designated one home game each season as an Autism Awareness game at Gilyard’s suggestion.

Gilyard is a three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection, earning the recognition each season.

He is on the verge of breaking the NCAA DI career steals record after leading the country in steals during each of the last two seasons. Gilyard has also been named a semifinalist for the Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year Award each season.

In addition, Gilyard is Richmond’s career leader in assists and will finish as one of the best scorers in program history.
