Character

Gibbons will go down as one of the best leaders that have come through the Duke women’s soccer program. After not making the NCAA Tournament in 2014, Gibbons was tabbed as one of three captains for the 2015 season. Along with the other captains, Gibbons decided that if this team was going to be successful, it would have to change the culture of the program. The trio not only changed the culture, but had everyone buy into the changes. Not only was the team successful, but the Blue Devils ended up advancing to the NCAA College Cup, before falling in the championship game. Gibbons is one of the hardest workers on the team and puts other people before herself. She makes everyone feel a part of the team whether they are a starter or coming off the bench.

Community

During Gibbons’ time at Duke, the Blue Devil women’s soccer team has taken in two young ladies that had been stricken with cancer. Gibbons and her teammates have spent time with them and welcomed them to practice. Additionally, Gibbons has spoken to girls’ soccer teams about hard work and dedication over the course of her career. She has been a part of different youth soccer clinics that Duke has led during the seasons, as well.

Competition

One of the best defenders and overall players in the nation, Gibbons earned NSCAA second-team All-America honors in 2015 while leading Duke to the NCAA College Cup. She earned NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team accolades as well as NSCAA All-Region honors. Gibbons is a two-time All-ACC selection and received All-ACC Freshman honors as a rookie. She has been competing along with the best players in the nation on the United States U-23 National Team over the last year as well as other U.S. national teams prior to joining the U-23 squad. Along with being an excellent defender, Gibbons is tremendous on the offensive side as she owns seven career goals and 14 career assists over four years thus far.
