A biology major with a focus on biotechnology and physiology, Christine Etzel is a pre-medicine student interested in becoming an orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon. She earned a competitively funded BrownConnect LINK Summer Funded Award for the summer of 2017, completing independent research and shadowing orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brett Owens. She co-authored an article titled “Shoulder and Elbow Injuries in Soccer Goalkeepers versus Field Players in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2009-2010 through 2013-2014” for publication in The Physician and Sportsmedicine scientific journal; she presented her research at the Brown University Public Health Research Day 2018 Poster Presentations. Etzel worked on an article titled “Epidemiology of Upper Extremity Soccer Injuries Among High-School and College-Aged Players in the U.S.: An Analysis of the 1999-2016 NEISS Database,” while was accepted for publication by the Sports Health journal. Throughout her career, she has maintained a 3.60 cumulative grade-point average.

Character

A two-time team captain, Etzel has helped lead the team to consistent success with Brown finishing in the top half of the Ivy League standings for three straight years for the first time since 1992-94. A mainstay on the field, she has played 4,328 minutes of a possible 4,514 minutes, which is 95.9 percent over the last three seasons. Off the field, she is a member of the Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) serving as a mentor, a member of Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and she is an Athletes in Action (AIA) leader.

Community

Etzel earned a Global Sport Community Fellowship through Brown’s Global Sport Leadership Initiative for the summer of 2018. She designed and implemented a five-week summer soccer program to encourage the growth of the game and support summer sport opportunities for Providence youth in partnership with the Providence After School Alliance (PASA). Etzel volunteers at the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School and with Project GOAL, as well as at the Rhode Island Hospital as a patient visitor in the offseason. During the summer of 2016, Etzel was accepted to the Atlantis Fellowship for an international experience in Hospital Universitario Miguel Servet in Zaragoza, Spain. She rotated specialties and observed multiple surgeries, diagnoses, and check-ups, while scribing records for the entire experience.

Competition

A three-time All-Ivy and two-time All-New England selection, Etzel ranked third all-time at Brown in shutouts (19), fourth in wins (27) and 10th in saves (209) entering the 2018 season. In 2016, she earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-Ivy and first-team All-Mid Atlantic honors, while ranking second in the NCAA in save percentage (0.921), fourth in goals-against average (0.361), and 13th in shutouts (10) at the end of the regular season. As a junior, she gained honorable mention All-Ivy and second-team All-New England honors, while helping the team post its most wins (11) since 2000.
