Character

Welmon is a two-year team captain at LMU and has served as LMU’s Friday starter since his freshman year. He was thrown into the leader role on the pitching staff his first season, and Head Coach Jason Gill credits him with playing a huge role in making LMU a successful program. His work ethic is as good as Gill has ever seen in his 20 years of coaching. Welmon went 7-4 on a team that was 27-27 as a freshman and 5-4 on a team that went 24-27 as a sophomore, coming out a winner in LMU’s program-building years under Gill.

Community

Welmon has worked LMU Summer Camps and as a volunteer coach for a local youth baseball team. He has also participated in LMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee community service efforts, including beach clean-ups. Welmon also volunteered with the Surfrider Foundation.

Competition

Welmon has served as LMU’s Friday starter for all four years of his collegiate career. He is currently listed on the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Watch List, which will ultimately name the nation’s top amateur baseball player. The two-time All-West Coast Conference selection has tossed 6.0-plus innings in 35 of his 45 career starts (as of 3/9/15) and has completed 5.0-plus innings in all but two starts. He has recorded a quality start in 16 of his last 19 starts (32 QS in his career) as of March 9, 2015. A 2015 Preseason All-WCC selection, he elected to return to LMU after being selected by the Pirates in the 2014 MLB Draft.

He currently holds the third-best ERA in LMU history (2.73) and is first in LMU history in walks per nine innings (1.85). His 24 career wins (as of 3/9/15) rank 8th in LMU history, and he has posted a .667 winning percentage (24-12) in his career. He has managed an ERA under 2.40 in each of his last three seasons, including a 2.30 ERA in 2013, a 2.37 ERA in 2014 and a 1.37 ERA through four starts in 2015.
