Classroom

In the classroom, Sorrell is one of the top student-athletes at UAB. He not only is a four-time Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient, but last season, Sorrell earned the C-USA?men’s soccer Spirit of Service Award, given to the top student-athlete based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. He was also tabbed to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team and the C-USA?All-Academic team.

Character

Sorrell showed what kind of character he has as a young boy, when he earned the rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America. When he came to college, Sorrell redshirted his first year at UAB because the coaches did not expect him to make a big contribution. However, from that point on, Sorrell has seen his hard work and determination pay off, as he has not come out of the lineup since his redshirt freshman season - a span of 58 straight games heading into his senior season. Sorrell was so impressive as a leader that his teammates voted him captain as a junior, making him one of only a handful of UAB men’s soccer players that will be a team captain for two seasons.

Community

Sorrell has been one of the leaders in the community on the UAB men’s soccer team. Some examples of his work in the greater Birmingham community include: volunteering time last spring to help build a playground at a local school adjacent to the UAB soccer field and at a local park on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to help pick up trash, sweep the walkways and clean the park. He has helped out at several local charities along with other UAB student-athletes through the “I Change” UAB community service project and has served supper at the Ronald McDonald House, gone to numerous classrooms to read to the children and talk to them about the importance of staying in school.

Competition

Sorrell enters his final season having played and started all 58 games since his freshman year. Even more impressive is the fact that he has played 5,336 out of a possible 5,472 minutes, or about 97.5 percent of the time. Last season, as a junior, Sorrell was elected team captain and showed his leadership as he earned third-team all-conference accolades. He has led the team in minutes played in each of his three seasons and anchors a defense that could be one of the top back lines in the conference this year.
