Classroom

Gibson has been just as successful in the classroom as he has been on the court. He carries a 3.22 GPA as a double major in information systems and infrastructure assurance with a minor in finance. He was named the 2010 Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year and also was UTSA’s 2009-10 Southland Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Gibson was one of just 12 players nationally named to the 2010 Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team and is a two-time Southland All-Academic Team honoree.

Character

Gibson has been a natural leader for the UTSA men’s basketball team since his freshman season when he assumed starting duties at point guard. He has battled through ankle and back injuries in his three-year career and has 85 games (77 starts) under his belt as he enters his senior season. He is a prototypical floor general who is respected by his teammates. As an example of his leadership qualities, Gibson was UTSA’s representative to the 2009 NCAA Leadership Foundation Conference.

Community

Gibson is extremely involved in numerous community-service activities. He has been a leader in the UTSA basketball team’s community-service projects, which include helping with the annual move-in day (student-athletes help new dorm residents move belongings into their rooms each August), speaking engagements at local elementary and middle school and visits to local hospitals (BAMC Burn Unit for injured U.S. soldiers, San Antonio Children’s Hospital, etc.).

Competition

A three-time All-Southland Conference selection at guard, Gibson enters his final campaign as a preseason first-team all-league pick. He became the 13th Roadrunner to reach 1,000 career points during his junior season and currently stands ninth all-time with 1,104 points. He averaged 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game in 2009-10 and he ranked second in the Southland in assists, steals and free-throw percentage (.825). Gibson was the 2008 Southland Freshman of the Year and was just the third freshman in NCAA history to lead the nation in steals (3.3 spg).
