Dimitri Kourtis is a sports business major at Mercer maintaining a 3.15 grade-point average. Outside of a career in professional baseball, he aspires to continue working with and influencing youth as a baseball coach, and he plans to pursue a master’s degree as a graduate assistant to help prepare him for that opportunity.

Character

Although known by the Mercer community for his on-field attributes, Kourtis is admired by the Bears’ coaching staff and administration for his strong leadership traits and unwavering moral character. He has had a team-first approach since arriving on campus, including forgoing his desire to be a starting pitcher to better serve the team out of the bullpen. He is a leader off the field and in the locker room, using his strong moral values to serve as an example to his teammates. Kourtis can also be described as hard worker who will not make excuses, despite overcoming several life obstacles including a hearing deficiency.

Community

Kourtis has been heavily involved in Mercer’s community service efforts during his four years on campus, leading multiple projects throughout the season. Over the past year alone, he has helped spearhead new initiatives with the Ronald McDonald House, Brookdale Elementary and the Children’s Hospital of Macon. Kourtis has also been a four-year participant with the Bears’ annual project with Middle Georgia’s Miracle League.

Competition

Kourtis has been a four-year standout in the Mercer bullpen and is on pace to become the program’s all-time leader in saves. He has established himself as one of the premier closers in the Southeast over the last two seasons, compiling a 7-1 record with six saves and an impressive 0.95 ERA despite missing time with injury. A three-time all-conference selection (second-team 2014, first-team 2013, all-freshman 2012), Kourtis has totaled 18 victories and 17 saves during his career with the Bears, while boasting a career ERA of 2.67.
