Elizabeth Woerner has excelled academically since her freshman season at Memphis. She has been a member of the Tiger 3.0 Club and named to the dean’s list in all previous six semesters of her collegiate career. The Bloomington, Ill., native was also listed to the All-American Athletic Conference Academic Team in 2016 and 2017, and she was a two-time AAC Weekly Honor Roll recipient in 2017 (Aug. 21 and Oct. 9).

Character

Woerner is a senior participant in the University of Memphis’ most selective and competitive leadership scholarship program, Emerging Leaders. Throughout this four-year program, she has not only given back hundreds of hours of service to her community, but also she has engaged in leadership coursework and projects that will ultimately serve to benefit the world around her. Woerner is currently engaged in a leadership capstone project that will surely leave her legacy on campus and in the surrounding community. She is an intentional and authentic leader who lives and leads by her values and character, and impresses upon others the importance of integrity, compassion, inclusion and empowerment. Whether teaching leadership classes to a group of kindergarteners at an inner-city school in Memphis, or using her own leadership skills to mentor younger students on campus, Woerner uses her platform in sports to create positive change for those around her. This will be the legacy she leaves behind at the University of Memphis.

Community

Woerner has been involved in the greater Memphis community on a regular basis, serving at several nonprofits in the Memphis area since her career began. She regularly serves at Target House engaging with children and families who are long-term patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She also spends time serving at the FedEx Family House, which serves children and families that receive care at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. In addition, Woerner has served the community through Read Across America, Shelby Farms, Ronald McDonald House, and this year, is running the St. Jude Half Marathon while fundraising to support the mission and cause of St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Finally, as a member of the women’s soccer team she and her teammates participate annually in a Zumbathon and also serve at a water station for the St. Jude Marathon.

Woerner has been on the Memphis Student Athlete Advisory Committee since her freshman year. In the spring of 2017, Woerner and the Tigers ranked No. 2 nationally among all NCAA Division I institutions in community service, as announced by NCAA Team Works. She has been a member of the committee’s executive team since her sophomore year, and this year was voted by her peers as president. Woerner was also selected to serve as Coordinator of Student-Athlete Engagement on the 2018-19 American Athletic Conference SAAC Executive Board.

Competition

A four-year starter for the Tigers, Woerner has been a staple in the Memphis offensive attack since her freshman campaign. As of nomination time, the senior forward had tallied 20 goals and eight assists in her career. Woerner netted four goals, including the game-winner against Alabama in her first collegiate game, and tallied an assist her freshman season. As a sophomore, Woerner tallied five goals, five assists and registered two multiple-goal games. In two of the three games she scored, her goals were game-winners. Last season, Woerner started all 20 matches for Memphis and was named a team captain. She scored a team-high 11 goals and three assists. Woerner also has been a standout in the league. She was named to the 2018 All-American Athletic Conference Preseason Team after earning first-team All-AAC honors in 2017. She also was named the league’s player of the week on Oct. 24, 2016.
