Classroom

An international student whose first language is not English, Gabriel Carlsson carries a 3.6 grade-point average. An interdisciplinary major in communications and economics with a minor in business, Carlsson was one of 46 student-athletes in the country to be named to the NCAA Division I Scholar All-Region Team last year, while also being one of 11 players voted to the Patriot League All-Academic Team.

Character

Carlsson is the type of player every coach dreams of having. He’s a workhorse who consistently gives the same thing day-in and day-out. He’s dependable and never disappoints. He runs more than anyone else on the field and does everything the right way, whether it’s at practice or in a game. Off the field, he’s a quiet leader, leading by example.

Community

Throughout his four years as a collegiate student-athlete Carlsson has been active in the community. He’s spent his Sunday evenings helping children with special needs practice soccer and develop fundamental skills through the Pipeline Soccer Club. He’s donated time with Alliance to the Bay, a nonprofit that helps to lead, support and inspire local action to restore and protect the lands, rivers and streams of the local Chesapeake Bay watershed. He’s also teamed with an alum to work with Cristo Rey Jesuit High School to empower Baltimore City students to succeed in college, work and life. While Carlsson was a freshman at South Florida, he volunteered at an afterschool program with local children in the Tampa area.

Competition

Carlsson has been the backbone of Loyola’s midfield unit for the last two years. Playing more minutes than any other Greyhound in that span, Carlsson led all field players in minutes-played last year and was the lone player to start all 18 games. After spending his freshman season at South Florida, where he helped the Bulls to the NCAA Tournament, he transferred to Loyola where he was named a two-time All-Patriot League selection (first-team 2017, second-team 2016) and a member of the 2017 All-Northeast Region Third Team. He ranked third in the Patriot League in assists last year and third in the NCAA’s single-game highs in assists.
