Character
John has shown great character and leadership during his career as a Husky reflected by the fact that he is a two-year team co-captain as voted by his teammates. During his sophomore season, George broke his nose in the game and after being attended to by a trainer and given a facemask to wear, came back on the field to score two goals and lead the squad to a 2-1 victory. The leadership and character he showed within the adversity as just a sophomore showed he would be a special player and leader for the program. During his junior year, the squad hit a mid-season slump. The coaches decided to move George from his center midfield position to the center back position. Although he preferred to play in the midfield, he welcomed the change with open arms and embraced the position. In times of struggle, he literally put the team on his back, leading with his voice and by example. With his play and leadership, he helped the team out of its slump and led the Huskies to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Community
Every summer the last four years, George has worked as a counselor for a week at a Greek Orthodox Christian Church Camp called All Saints Camp in Gig Harbor, Washington. While at camp, he serves as a role model for elementary-aged children. In addition, George worked at a “Kids in Cancer” camp also known as “Camp Agape” in Gig Harbor, Washington where he held a soccer clinic for the kids and their families, representing the UW in the process by signing autographs and giving a talk on what it’s like to be a college athlete. George also assists a non-profit organization called the Sons of Pericles, which is the junior order of the American Hellenic Education Progressive Association (AHEPA). The purpose of the group is to help out the local Greek-American community and reach out to young Greeks in the area who need support. George served as the Vice President of the club as a sophomore at UW. Group also was influential in bringing some professors from Greece to the UW to teach in the Hellenic Studies Department. Financially, George has been an influence as well as he has helped raise funds to donate to his church and the UW’s Hellenic Studies program.
Competition
George is a member of the 2008 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. In 2007, he was named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Far West Region second-team, and was a member of the All-Pac-10 First-Team. John started all but one game over the past two seasons, and has lead the Huskies to back-to-back trips to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He has played the majority of his career as a midfielder, but has also contributed to the team on the defensive end.
