Gibson Smith IV

Smith graduated from Georgetown last May, earning his degree in economics while maintaining a 3.49 GPA. He is now pursing a Master’s of Science with a 3.73 GPA.

Last season, Smith was named a USILA Scholar All-American and has also garnered BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors every year.

Smith is a two-year team captain for the Hoyas, having been voted his teammates each time. He leads both by example and vocally, all while balancing the rigors of academics with elite competition on the field.

Described as a general on the field, head coach Kevin Warne has said Smith is a player that is fully capable of stepping in to run a practice in his absence—not only because of his intricate knowledge of the playbook and game, but also because of the respect his teammates have for him.

Smith has put his plans to work in the financial sector on hold to help the Hoyas pursue their championship dreams.

Smith has helped spearhead Georgetown’s annual Cycle for Survival, which raises money and awareness for rare cancer patients. He also helped organize the team’s participation in the Race to Beat Cancer 5K, which supports the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute (MGCI) at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Smith has started in every game of his career on the Hilltop since he earned a spot at close defense as a freshman. He has helped lead the Hoyas to three-straight BIG EAST Championships and led the Blue & Gray to their first NCAA Quarterfinals appearance since 2007 in 2021.

Last season, Smith was named a USILA second team All-American, Inside Lacrosse honorable mention media All-American, USA Lacrosse Magazine honorable mention All-American, and second team All-BIG EAST selection despite missing half of the season with an injury. He was also named an Inside Lacrosse first team media All-American during the pandemic-shortened season.

In 2019, Smith was named an Inside Lacrosse third team media All-American, USILA honorable mention All-American, first team All-BIG EAST selection and was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. Lastly, as a freshman, he earned second team All-BIG EAST recognition.

Smith currently ranks second all-time at Georgetown with 69 caused turnovers and is eighth all-time on the Hilltop with 217 ground balls.
