Classroom

An eight-time member of the Director’s Honor Roll, Grant Watson is a dedicated student who has excellent relationships with his professors. In 2014, he was an honorable mention Academic All-Pac-12 selection. School has always been a priority for him, and Watson is choosing to stay an extra quarter in order to finish his minor. If baseball doesn’t work out, he wants to go into the field of environmental science.

Character

Watson is a high-character individual and blue-collar style of athlete. He goes in and does his job and puts in the extra work on the side. He is one of the leaders in the locker room that younger players look up to.

Community

During his career, at UCLA, Watson has donated his time to give food to the poor during the Christmas season, and he is always happy to stop and sign autographs for children at his games.

Competition

Watson is a four-year starting pitcher for the Bruins. In three-plus seasons, Watson has made 74 appearances and a team-high 51 starts. He has an overall combined record of 24-15 and has posted a 1.44 ERA so far this season. He earned Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week last season for his eight-inning performance against Cal, posted 10 quality starts on the season and led all pitchers in the Pac-12 with five pickoffs on the year.

As a sophomore, Watson helped the Bruins achieve post-season success by earning the victory against San Diego at the NCAA Los Angeles Regional on June 2, pitching seven shutout innings and allowing one hit while fanning five. He was named to the NCAA Los Angeles Regional All-Tournament Team and then pitched again at the College World Series on June 21 vs. North Carolina, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out three to help send UCLA to the CWS Finals.
