He was elected to the ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District second team following his junior season, and has been selected each year he has been eligible for Academic All-Southern Conference, Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll and Southern Conference Commissioner’s Medal honors. Macnamara is presently developing an honors economics thesis, applying to the London School of Economics and Political Science for an MSc in econometrics and mathematical economics, and also working on Fulbright, Marshall, and Smith Scholarship applications. In 2010, he received a meritorious distinction in an international Mathematical Contest in Modeling for competing on a team that placed in the top-20 percent overall.

Character

Macnamara has demonstrated tremendous leadership, teamwork, integrity and work ethic on and off the field at Davidson by managing the responsibilities of being a varsity team captain, fraternity treasurer and double major all at the same time. He was elected as a team captain prior to his junior season and is serving the same role as a senior. Most recently, Macnamara was nominated by the president of the Student Government Association to the Advisory Council on Finance, Personnel, & Development, whose responsibility is to advise the Davidson College president regarding issues in those areas. Macnamara also served as the men’s soccer team’s SAAC representative the past two years. For summer vacation in 2011, he worked a 40-hour per week internship at the FDIC while also playing for Real Maryland, a PDL soccer team. Macnamara is a great teammate in the classroom, too. He has worked on mathematics teams that have made recommendations for a local community group (a parking lot design) and Davidson (On-Campus Computing improvements), and also participated on a Davidson team in a mathematical modeling competition to develop a program to locate criminals based on the location of their crimes. In 2010, Macnamara was one of five executive committee members for Davidson¹s chapter of Kappa Sigma, serving as the treasurer. Macnamara has abided by the Davidson College Honor Code, a central part of campus life at Davidson, which requires students maintain the highest level of integrity and entrusts them to take unproctored exams.

Community

Macanamara has participated in and taken a leadership role in community events. He led the men’s soccer team’s participation in events such as the Alexander Youth Networks Angel Tree Campaign, Toys for Tots and the Davidson-Cornelius Daycare Center Annual 5k, and also participated with other student-athletes in Davidson’s ‘Cats Carnival for local kids. With his fraternity, Kappa Sigma, he volunteered at the Buddy Benefit Concert to raise money for the Buddy System, which helps children with special needs. Macnamara has also volunteered on Davidson’s Community Service Day and has coached in Davidson men’s soccer clinics and summer camps.

Competition

Macnamara was named to the All-Southern Conference second team and the All-Southern Conference Tournament team last season as a central defender after making several crucial plays to keep opponents off the scoreboard. He has been a fixture on the field for the Wildcats since his freshman year. Macnamara earned Southern Conference All-Freshman honors and was the only Wildcat rookie to play in all 19 matches in 2008. He has started every match he played in the past two seasons and helped Davidson earn five shutouts last season. His teammates elected him as a team co-MVP along with Alex Caskey (now playing professionally) following the year.
