Classroom

Ivo Cerda is on track to graduate with a degree in cellular and molecular biology. He is a two-time Academic All-Region selection, advancing to receive first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors last season, one of only two juniors in the nation to do so.

Cerda is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honoree. He has a 3.92 GPA and plans to go to medical school and eventually become a doctor.

Character

Cerda is in his second season as co-captain of the University of Michigan men’s soccer team. Revered by his teammates, Cerda shares the captains armband for every match with fellow senior Robbie Mertz. At the university level, he was named the 2016 Rookie of the Year and was the recipient of the 2018 Bates Deskins Award, given to the most outstanding junior across the athletic department at the University of Michigan.

Community

Cerda regularly visits C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, spending time with terminally-ill children, and also is a registered volunteer with the Michigan Medicine Volunteer Services.

Cerda has volunteered his time mentoring students at Scarlett Middle School and has participated in a reading program at Harvest Elementary School. He also assisted with MAAC, a nonprofit helping tenants in the Mack Avenue Community (an underprivileged neighborhood in downtown Detroit) with housing renewal and move-in projects.

Competition

Cerda is a four-year starter at midfield, playing in 54 matches (as of Sept. 3), with 50 starts. In those matches, he scored seven goals and tallied three assists, amassing 17 points.

As co-captain, Cerda helped Michigan complete a massive turnaround in 2017, winning eight more matches than the previous year while capturing the program’s first-ever Big Ten title. With Cerda in the lead, the Wolverines also returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years.
