Classroom

Johnny will graduate in May 2013 with a degree in sociology.  His career goal is to be a physical education teacher at the elementary level and to coach high school athletes in as many sports as possible.

Character

Head Coach Gene Stephenson on Johnny’s character:  Johnny was a scholarship basketball player at Arizona State his freshman year and left to be closer to his father who had a stroke.  He then played his entire redshirt freshman year without a scholarship as an out-ostate player until he could get a baseball scholarship the following year.  He has been an exemplary hitter as a middle of the order guy since his freshman year and has been a better inspirational leader each year in the program.  He has become not only one of the premier senior players in baseball this year, but has become one of the exceptional team leaders.

Community

Coy helped with the Koyie Hill’s Big Wish/Make a Wish Foundation Fundraiser and works the Shocker Baseball Camps to learn to teach children baseball skills and to watch them improve. He has volunteered at the Shocker Athletic Scholarship Organization Ice Cream Social, along with helping the Wichita Police Department and Wichita Public Schools with the “Shocks, Cops & Kids” event.  He volunteered at a walk-a-thon at a Wichita elementary school and rang bells for the Salvation Army during the holiday season.

Competition

In 2013, Coy has been named a first team preseason All-American by the NCBWA and a third teamer by Collegiate Baseball.  He has also been named to the preseason all-Valley team.  In 2012, he hit .344 with 17 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 63 RBI and was named first team All-Valley.  He also earned National Player and Hitter of the Week honors in 2012.  In 2011, he hit .274 with 17 doubles, seven home runs and 59 RBI and earned first team All-Valley honors.  In 2010, he hit .331 with 13 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 32 RBI and earned honorable mention All-Valley honors and first team Freshman All-American honors by Collegiate Baseball.
