Joonas Jokinen maintains a 3.89 GPA at Temple University. As a junior, he was selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team and helped the Owls to their fourth consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award. Jokinen was also named the 2016-17 American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner. As a junior, he earned American Athletic Conference Honor Roll in the first week of play (8/29). In 2014, he was named to the Director’s Honor Roll for having a GPA over 3.0.

Character

Jokinen is a talented player with a keen eye for soccer. The Helsinki, Finland, native brings European strategy to the field. According to Head Coach David MacWilliams, he has a high soccer IQ that he uses to help his teammates. His teammates agree that he’s a great person to help fine tune their skills and with whom to just talk the game of soccer.

Community

Jokinen has participated in a number of community service efforts of Temple Men’s soccer during his first three seasons with the squad. Most recently, he was one of the Owls that helped serve the less fortunate at the Chosen 300 Ministries Soup Kitchen in Philadelphia on September 19, 2016. He also joined his team as well as a number of other student-athletes in volunteering at the special Olympics on November 5, 2016.

Competition

Jokinen started 12 games in 2016 seeing action in 14 and earning second-team all-conference honors. The senior was the Owls’ second leading scorer. As a junior, he logged three goal and six assists for a total of 12 points. Jokinen was also named Soccer Six Player of the Week (8/29). As of nomination time in early September, Jokinen was one of two scorers for the Owls. Temple men’s soccer looks to the senior to lead in goals as the season progresses.
