Classroom

As senior student in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, James is majoring in Resource Economics with a minor in Geography and plans to graduate in December of this year. Throughout his undergraduate career, James focused his academic efforts in the area of Environmental Economics and Policy, which provides him the foundation he needs to effect change in natural resource and environmental policy issues within both the public and private sectors. A native of Trinidad and Tobago, his coursework has given him the analytical and decision making skills he needs to have a positive influence on the working economy of his homeland.

Character

Throughout his four years at UConn, James has demonstrated leadership and personal integrity. During his first semester in college, James adapted well with the American educational system and displayed discipline and a strong work ethic. James was forced to join the program midway through the academic year and embraced the opportunity to adjust to school and find his place on the playing field. His outgoing personality and friendly demeanor allowed him to mesh well with his teammates, despite his late arrival. As a result of his abilities to lead effectively, James was named Captain of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 squads.

Community

During the fall semester of 2007, James will be involved in the Husky Sport program that connects UCONN students and student-athletes with North End Hartford youths through school-based, after school, and summer activities. As the Captain and leader of the men’s soccer team, as well as a minority and foreign student, James is giving up his personal time to work with urban youth and expose them to the opportunities which potentially lie ahead. He serves as an example of someone who has had the opportunity to use his skills to secure a college education and hone his athletic skills. He is giving back to the community in positive ways using both the lessons he learned as a youth and his current athletic abilities.

Competition

James’s athletic honors speak to his abilities in the field. As a freshman, James was named to the All-Big East team, First Team All-New England, and College Soccer News All-Freshman All-American team. As a sophomore, James was named NSCAA Second Team All-American and First Team All-New England. In addition, James was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year, a member of the All-Big East Team and was a candidate for the prestigious M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. As a junior, James became the 10th player in UConn Men’s Soccer history to be named an NSCAA First Team All-American. He was named to the First Team All-Northeast, First Team All-Big East and once again was honored as the Big East Defensive Player of the Year. James was also a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. Entering his senior year, James has been named a Pre-Season All-American and is a candidate for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy for a third straight year.
