Classroom

Anderson is a business major with a concentration in marketing in Richmond’s undergraduate business school, which was ranked No. 1 in academic quality by Business Week. His career goal off the court is to follow in the footsteps of his aunt and start a company selling computer software.

Character

Anderson is unquestionably the leader of a Spider team that was 8-22 the year before he arrived, but has improved in each of his three seasons, going from 16 wins in 2007-08, to 20 in 2008-09 and a school-record 26 in 2009-10. Head coach Chris Mooney constantly talks, both publicly and privately, about how the key to the Spiders’ success is that Anderson is a star, but has no ego and causes no problems. His unassuming actions set a positive example for the rest of the team and have set the tone for a program that is thriving on the high quality of young men on its roster.

Community

The Spiders as a team are heavily involved in the Richmond community, earning coach Mooney a spot on Richmond Style Weekly’s Top-40 Under-40 based on community involvement, but Mooney says it is the players’ willingness to participate — led by Anderson — that deserves the credit. Last year the team worked with the homeless through CARITAS, performed a two-hour clinic for the Special Olympics on an off day during the season and adopted a 14-year-old brain-tumor survivor through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, whom Anderson stays in touch with through text messages. This year the team has added a partnership with St. Joseph’s Villa For Children, which will include frequent visits to their campus and the team has raised more than $6,000 for charity over the last three years.

Competition

Anderson, who was the 2010 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and an Associated Press honorable mention All-American, has been named to the preseason Wooden Award watch list. He averaged 17.8 points per game last season, leading the Spiders to a final AP Top-25 ranking of No. 24 and a No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament. Anderson is one of just five players in Atlantic 10 history to be named both A-10 Rookie of the Year and A-10 Player of the Year, joining the likes of Marcus Camby and Jameer Nelson, and he enters his senior year ranked eighth on Richmond’s all-time scoring list with 1,552 points. He is on the preseason All-A-10 first team and preseason all-defensive team. Anderson enters his senior year sixth on Richmond’s career list for steals with 164.
