Kevin Swick

Classroom

Swick, was a 2013 Capital One Academic All-American Third Team selection boasts a 3.83 GPA as a business administration major with a psychology minor. He has been President of the Value Investing Club since 2011, where members attend Berkshire Hathaway meetings & compete in national pitch competitions. He has enacted a multi-year strategic plan to increase the prominence of the group on campus as well as its reputation for motivated and well-trained investors to enter the buy side. Swick spent the summer of 2013 away from baseball, interning for Fidelity Investments in Boston where he worked as a equity investment analyst. He wrote a report on traditional brick and mortar banks vs. direct (online) banks and pitched three different stocks. In the summer of 2012 he played in the Alaska Baseball League and interned for Alaska Permanent Capital Management where he created an asset report on commodities and analyzed emerging markets and the large impact they have on the supply and demand of commodities. In the fall of 2012 he worked for a member of the USC Marshall Undergraduate Student Investment Fund. He also worked on the Next Generation Bricks and Mortar Retail Investment Strategy in the fall of 2012. He is a member of the Dean’s List from 2010-present. Swick is also a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. He is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree.

Character

Kevin Swick is a student-athlete of very high character. Swick walked-on to the USC baseball team and through hard work and perseverance made the team and then became a three-year starter for the Trojans. He earned Male Trojan of the Year honors in 2013 at USC’s Tommy Awards, which is an awards program for USC’s student athletes. The award recognizes student-athletes that best exemplify the qualities of a Trojan - Faithful, Scholarly, Skillful, Courageous and Ambitious. He is a leader in the clubhouse as one of six student-athletes on the baseball team’s leadership board (team captains). The younger student-athletes on the team look up to Swick, not only for the way that he worked to achieve his goal on the field, but also in how he excels in the classroom as well. He is an executive member of the Trojan Athletic Senate where he serves as the head of academic outreach for NCAA student-athletes at USC. He has organized the student-athlete faculty appreciation dinner, put together career panels for graduating seniors and put on a variety of other academic events for student-athletes.

Community

Kevin is very active in the USC community, as are many of his Trojan teammates. Since his freshman year, Kevin has spent every Tuesday making and providing sandwiches, fruit, water and toiletries every Tuesday to the homeless on Skid Row through the USC Catholic Center Food for Homeless Operation. Swick has also participated in events with his teammates and Best Buddies, a group that creates opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He has also spent time visiting with veterans at the Los Angeles V.A. Hospital. He has also participated in community events that are USC Athletic Department wide, such as the Community Bowl, where student-athletes visit a local, underprivileged elementary school, paint murals, clean up the school and play games with the students. Swick has also taken part in a “Day in Troy,” where students from the surrounding Los Angeles area, many of whom would be the first in their families to attend college get to visit USC, see the campus and get excited about what college has to offer.

Competition

Swick is a versatile competitor for USC as he can play all over the field. In 2014 he is the Trojan’s starting third baseman and is currently one of the Trojans top hitters. In 2013 he was also a starter, splitting time between first and third base where he batted .305 through 49 games. He drove in 16 runs, tallied 12 doubles and two home runs. He also stole 5-of-7 bases. His fielding percentage of .982 was the highest of any Trojan infielder. In 2012, he started 52 games (appeared in 54 overall), mostly at third base, where he drove in 23 runs and tallied 11 doubles. As a true freshman in 2011 after walking on he appeared in 22 games. He was named a top prospect in the Alaska League in 2013. Entering the season he had a career batting average of .278 and had appeared in 125 games, making 110 starts.
