She was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll following the 2019 season and has eclipsed the 3.20 mark in her last three semesters, including an impressive 3.55 in the Fall of 2019. In the Spring of 2019, Smith participated in a large-scale manufacturing project at Lehigh. She worked with a group of engineers on product development to solve a problem presented by a Lehigh Valley company. One of Smith’s key roles was researching market size and cost differential of injection molding versus 3D printing. Smith spent the Summer of 2019 interning with PPL Electric Utilities in Allentown, Pa. Upon graduation in May, Smith has already accepted a position with Air Products in Allentown in their Supply Chain career development program.

Character

Smith is well respected by her teammates and is entering her second season as a team captain for the Mountain Hawks. Her character is also shown by her selflessness. Smith played second base primarily as a freshman and sophomore but began to move around more in her junior season. While most of her time was spent at second base, Smith also started games at third base, left field, and center field. Her actions are always in the best interest of the team.

In addition to her softball duties, Smith has been involved in the Lehigh Athletics Leadership Academy (Flight45) within the athletics department. In Lehigh’s Leadership Academy, Smith graduated from the Emerging Leaders program, where she learned how to be an effective vocal leader on her team and within the Lehigh community. The Leadership Legacies program is where she learned how to interact with coaches and teammates in order to effectively lead a team as a captain.

Community

Smith has been involved in several community outreach programs at Lehigh, most notably the annual Adopt-A-Family initiative around the holidays. Each Lehigh Athletics team adopts an underprivileged family and raise money throughout the semester to purchase holiday presents for their adopted family. It wraps up with an event where all the student-athletes present the gifts to the families. Last year, the Lehigh student-athletes raised more than $30,000. Prior to her time at Lehigh, Smith also participated in mission trips to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Smith helped build a church in Nicaragua and assisted with Vacation Bible School-type initiatives in both trips.

Competition

Smith enters her senior season as a three-time All-Patriot League honoree and the 2020 Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year. She earned first team All-Patriot League honors in 2019 after earning second team laurels following each of her first two seasons. From the time she stepped on campus, Smith has been a mainstay in the No. 3 hole in Lehigh’s batting order. For her career, Smith is a .321 career hitter with 30 doubles, 10 home runs, and 88 RBIs. Smith led the Patriot League with 67 hits in 2019 and ranked among the league leaders with a .368 batting average and 15 doubles. She was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team in her freshman and junior seasons. Smith reached the NCAA Tournament with Lehigh as a freshman in 2017 and reached the finals of the Patriot League Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
