Matthew Vangalen is a two-time Detroit Mercy Athletic Director’s Honor Roll member and a two-time MAAC Academic Honor Roll member (2017, 2018). He was selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team in 2018.

Character

Vangalen was named a team captain as a senior. He has been one of the leaders on the team since he arrived, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Community

Vangalen is a member of Detroit Mercy’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Competition

Vangalen is a two-time second-team All-MAAC selection (2017, 2018). He led the team with a school-record 51 points on a career-high 31 goals with 20 assists in 2018, helping Detroit Mercy to a school-record nine wins and a run to the MAAC title game. He broke the school record with 11 points and tied another pair of school records with seven goals and four assists at Manhattan, the most by any player in the MAAC on the year, and tied for the fifth-most in the NCAA on the season. In 2017, he led the team with 47 points (third in school history), 26 goals (seventh in school history) and 21 assists (tied for second in Titan record books). He finished his junior year fourth all-time in scoring with 98 points, fifth with 41 assists and sixth with 57 goals at Detroit Mercy despite only playing two seasons as a transfer from Furman after his freshman year.
