Character

“As the head softball coach of Wichita State University, I have known Neleigh Herring for six years. Throughout this time, I have observed her through some major transitions in her life. As coach, I have had an opportunity to observe her leadership skills and interaction with team members and coaching staff. Herring has the characteristics needed to pursue her ambitious career goals. She has proven her passion for sports through her playing and coaching abilities and investments into WSU and the travel ball organization that she has helped with. As a student-athlete, her communication skills, knowledge and compassion provide the team with a confident understanding of the game. She is approachable, receptive and highly motivated. Herring takes charge on the field and has a positive influence on the younger student-athletes in the program. Her abilities and performance have not gone unnoticed nationally. She has received numerous all-conference and NFCA All-Region Awards.

Herring is a dedicated student-athlete and her grades at WSU are exemplary. She has been on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester and will finish her undergraduate degree in three and half years. She has also flourished as a person since coming to Wichita State. In the six years I have known her, I have seen Herring’s confidence in herself, school, and softball grow to an all-time high. Her outgoing personality and willingness to help others are characteristics that will take her far in life. Herring continues to impress me with her knowledge and dedication to WSU, her family, and friends, and more importantly to her career ambitions. In 2021, she was asked to speak to incoming Wichita State business students for the Dean of the Barton School of Business. She has participated in numerous community service projects throughout her time as an athlete. Her passion for the sport of softball shines through her personality.  Herring’s work ethic is unmatched and her desire to make her teammates better is a high priority daily.”
