Classroom

Patricia Mattingly became the Navy volleyball program’s third CoSIDA Academic All-American last year when she received third-team accolades. She also was the 2016 and 2017 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her sport. Mattingly has received academic honors from the USNA in each of her six completed semesters by being named to the Superintendent’s List (highest of the two available honors). She carries a 3.85 cumulative GPA, has posted a 4.00 GPA in two semesters and is ranked 67th in her class (1,088) on the Overall Order of Merit (combines academic and military performance).

Character

Mattingly hopes to receive Navy aviation (pilot) for her service assignment, which she will learn this fall. As for additional character/leadership opportunities, she served as a squad leader during the USNA’s 2017 Plebe Summer. “I learned a lot about myself and also about how to take care of other people,” is how she phrased the opportunity. She currently is serving as the Operations Officer for her company within the Brigade of Midshipmen this semester. Finally, as a senior she helps to serve as a guide and mentor for the younger players on the team, especially with both the freshmen and our coaching staff being new to the USNA.

Community

Mattingly has been part of the USNA’s annual spring Special Olympics Weekend. She has worked with the track and field portion of the weekend in two of her three years, an opportunity she calls, “one of the best experiences I have had here.”

Competition

Mattingly was selected as the Patriot League Setter of the Year for both the 2016 and 2017 seasons. She also garnered first-team all-league honors in each of those two campaigns. Last year, she was named to the All-Patriot League Tournament Team after taking the Mids to the championship match of the event for the first time since the 1999 season. The Mids placed second in the league last year, which also was the best regular season finish for the team in 18 years, and was part of a school Division I recording-tying 23-win campaign. Mattingly set the Navy rally scoring era (since 2001) record for career assists during the 2017 season and, with just over 3,000 career assists as of nomination time, stands second overall at Navy.

She also ranks fourth at Navy among rally scoring players and ninth overall with 866 career digs. Mattingly ranks fifth at Navy with 41 career double-doubles, which places her second at the school for assists-digs double-doubles which includes five double-doubles in seven matches in 2018. Additionally, Navy has posted a 52-29 record overall and a 29-19 record in league play in matches she has started since becoming the team’s starting setter midway through her freshman season.

Mattingly set the Navy career assists record during the 3-0 victory by the Mids over Army on Saturday, October 6th. She posted a double-double of 31 assists and 12 digs to go along with four blocks, three kills and one ace in the victory. Mattingly has now dished out a Navy-best 3,421 career assists.

She has now became the first Navy player and the eighth in Patriot League history to amass over 3,000 career assists and over 1,000 career digs. Her 1,005 career digs also ranks sixth all-time at Navy.
