Classroom

Somers is a two-time member of the Patriot League Honor Roll and was a member of the PL All-Academic Team in 2014. He has a 3.342 grade-point average at West Point as an art, philosophy and literature major. He has been a member of the West Point Dean’s List every semester and is a member of the West Point Cadet Film Forum. He also co-founded the Academy’s Persian Club and spent part of the 2013 summer training in Tajikistan. He is fluent in the Persian language of Farsi and was a member of a jazz band for six years prior to coming to West Point.

Character

Somers is a very humble player who always gives credit to his defense for his low goals against average and high save percentage. Somers suffered a leg injury at the end of last season that needed surgery but bounced back to start the 2015 season. Head Coach Joe Alberici says, “Somers brings great ball-stopping ability and a relentless work ethic and desire to be as great a goalie as he can be. He is really impressive and not just on the field, which is a reflection of how much film he watches and additional time he spends working outside of practice.”

Community

Somers is part of an Army team that hosts many clinics at West Point throughout the year. The team had more than 400 youth ages 6 to 15 attend a full day of instruction and drills this winter.

Competition

Somers was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association in 2014. He is a two-time Second-Team All-Patriot League selection and was second in the nation in save percentage (.622) in 2014. He led the nation in goals against average at 5.43 in 2014, and he had held opponents to single digits for 13 straight starts as of Feb. 9. Somers was recently selected in the MLL Collegiate Draft at pick No. 51 by the Rochester Rattlers. He was named the team’s starter three games into his sophomore season and has not given it back outside the injury. He was also named the 2015 Patriot League Lacrosse Goalkeeper of the Year and member of the All-Patriot League First Team
