Scott Hooper will graduate in May with a degree in history. He has twice been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. For two years he was the men’s lacrosse representative on the Virginia Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Character

Hooper was voted one of UVA’s two team captains by his peers and is the lone senior captain. He inspires his teammates with a positive, yet constructive voice. He discovered during the summer of 2017 what Team IMPACT did for the country, and he immediately saw a way to connect with the Charlottesville community. He always thinks outside himself and toward the betterment of others. He saw Team IMPACT as a new way for himself and his teammates to reach a demographic in everyone’s local community that may get forgotten about.

Community

Hooper initiated and organized UVA men’s lacrosse’s venture with Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses to local college athlete teams, forming lifelong bonds and life-changing outcomes. He helped UVA connect with a young boy named Brian, and Hooper helped host a signing day party for him at UVA.

Hooper has also been involved in running the Will Barrow Memorial Flag Football Tournament, which raised more than $17K to benefit the UVA Helpline and suicide prevention in 2017, and he takes part in ACE (Athletes Committed to Education) through which he assists in tutoring elementary and middle school students at local schools.

Competition

Hooper was one of the nation’s best defensemen in 2017, being No. 1 in the ACC and No. 5 in the nation with 2.33 caused turnovers per game. He did not commit one penalty the entire season, and caused 35 turnovers in 2017. Hooper is the only player in the nation to have at least 20 caused turnovers and not record one penalty.
