Madick is a history concentrator with a secondary emphasis in government. She has a 3.287 cumulative grade-point average and is slated to graduate in June 2008. Madick was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 1 first team in 2007.

Character

Madick is a competitive leader and the Crimson’s lone captain. Her involvement with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and Peer Advising Fellow program are examples of her commitment to serving and leading her peers. She always strives to improve her performance. She has a strong sense of self and confidence in her attitude and abilities. She expects the best from herself and pushes others to give their best. Shelly does not back down from a challenge and looks for opportunities to learn and grow by overcoming obstacles. She thrives on challenges and always gives her best. Madick’s resolve has shown through on the field, where she has come up with her best performances in the biggest games. She earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors in each of the last three weeks of the 2007 season, won 11 of her last 12 decisions in the regular season and Ivy League Championship and pitched a no-hitter in the first game of the championship series.

Community

Madick is active in service of the Harvard student body as well as the surrounding community. She is chair of Harvard’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is a peer advising fellow, helping her fellow students adjust to the rigors of Harvard academics and the transition to college life. Madick also works each week at an area homeless shelter and has volunteered for an advisory service that provides information on small-claims court for those who cannot afford legal help.

Competition

Madick enters her senior season ranked third on Harvard’s career wins list (34) and fourth on career strikeouts list (330). Madick is Harvard’s recorded leader in career batting average against (.204) and ranked fourth in career earned-run average (2.08). She earned a host of honors as a junior while leading the Crimson to the Ivy League championship and an NCAA tournament berth. She was the Ivy League Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection. She was named to the All-Northeast Region second team, earned her team’s Most Outstanding Pitcher award for the second time in her career and was named Ivy Pitcher of the Week four times. Madick threw a no-hitter in the opening game of the inaugural Ivy League Championship series last season, striking out seven Penn batters and walking just one. She recorded a save later that day to clinch the series and the NCAA bid. She posted the lowest recorded opponents’ batting average in program history (.180) and ranked third on the Crimson single-season lists in wins (16) and strikeouts (148). Her 148 strikeouts came in 149.1 innings, and her 1.50 ERA was good for first in the Ivy League and 36th in the nation. Madick threw nine complete games. She struck out nine or more batters in five starts, including 14 in a two-hit shutout of Holy Cross. She threw a three-hitter in 1-0 loss to Albany in NCAA tournament. As a sophomore, Madick led Harvard with a 2.53 ERA and 88 strikeouts. She earned All-Ivy honorable mention as a freshman, leading the team with 94 strikeouts and posting a 1.54 ERA in league games.
