Classroom

Steven Coss has excelled in the classroom during his time at Canisius. A two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic team selection, Coss entered his senior season with a cumulative GPA of 3.69 as a dual major in finance and economics. He has been named to the school’s Dean’s List in six of his seven semesters and is on track to receive his bachelor’s degree in May.

Coss spent two months last summer in Florence, Italy, as part of an international study abroad experience at Lorenzo de’ Medici, where he completed his international business, global awareness and diversity course requirements. In August, Coss was one of just 17 students selected to participate in the Golden Griffin Fund as a student equity analyst. This opportunity will allow Coss and his classmates the chance to manage a real-money account featuring 30-stocks and three-mutual funds for Canisius. He and his classmates will present their findings as an in-depth investment thesis to the school’s investment advisory council at the end of the semester. Coss has also been a member of the school’s Economics and Finance Club since arriving on campus as a freshman in the fall of 2014.

Character

Coss was selected by his teammates to serve as team captain for the 2017-18 season. He was an alternate captain on last season’s squad, helping the team post a second-place finish in the MAAC standings. In his role as captain, he serves as a liaison between the players and coaching staff. He also works closely with members of the athletic department in a variety of roles.

Coss has been active in Canisius’ Student-Athlete Advisory Council during his time on Main Street. He serves as the lacrosse team’s representative on the council and recently represented Canisius at the MAAC SAAC meetings in November.

Community

Coss is a valued member of both the Canisus and greater Buffalo community. He has worked with a variety of charitable organizations during his time at Canisius, including Saint Luke’s Church, TIQVAH Hands of Hope, the Wheelchair Lacrosse National Championships, Medicial Mission International and Buffalo School 17.

Since arriving at Canisius, he has helped those less fortunate by packing meals during the holiday season at Saint Luke’s Church. In addition, he has done similar work with TIQVAH Hands of Hope in his hometown of Canton, Ohio. He and his teammates assisted with the Wheelchair Lacrosse National Championships, which were held in Buffalo this past September. That experience led him and the rest of the Golden Griffins to work with a local wheelchair lacrosse organization, the Wheelchair Lacrosse Bandits, to help them learn and experience the game. He and his teammates have done visits to local elementary schools this season to read to and interact with local school children. He has also spent time working with a local elementary school, School 17, by visiting twice a week as a classroom assistant.

Competition

Coss has excelled as a student-athlete during career at Canisius. During his first three seasons, he has recorded 35 points on 25 goals and 10 assists in 42 games played. He earned All-MAAC Second Team accolades last season after posting career highs in goals (18), assists (9) and points (25). He was one of just six Canisius players to start all 15 games for the Griffs last season.

Coss has been asked to take on a variety of roles during his time at Canisius. He served as the team’s top faceoff threat during the 2016 campaign, pacing the squad in faceoff wins (120), attempts (233) and winning percentage (.515). He also led Canisius that season with 44 ground balls. He was named to the MAAC All-Tournament team after claiming 13-of-22 draws against Quinnipiac and the MAAC Faceoff Specialist of the Year in the tournament’s semifinals. The 13 faceoff victories set the program’s postseason record in that category.

Coss has been reliable throughout his collegiate career, taking part in all 42 games played to date during his collegiate career.
