Character

“In my 10 years of coaching at Army West Point, I can say that Tommy Funk has been the best and most impressive leader in our basketball program. Tommy is the epitome of “do the next right thing,” head coach Jimmy Allen said.”  He is an incredibly intense competitor who inspires everyone around him to be confident and strive to perform at their best. This quality is not done with fake enthusiasm but is accomplished with a tremendous work ethic and genuine care to lift his teammates to success.

Coach Allen said: “In 27 years of coaching college basketball, I have never coached a player that did not give their best effort during practice. Tommy has never had a day where he did not give his best effort. He understands sacrifice and how much goes into building something special. He has been the consummate teammate in terms of sacrificing his time to improve himself and be a leader for his teammates. Tommy has sacrificed vacations and personal time to help our basketball program and Academy improve. The best thing that I can say about Tommy is that I would want him with me in tough times or when faced with pressure.”

Community

Funk has volunteered at the Special Olympics events hosted at West Point. Following games, he is always interacting with the young fans as he talks to them and signs autographs. He is extremely involved in postgame clinics hosted by the men’s basketball programs.

Competition

Funk enters his senior year as one of the best point guards in Army West Point men’s basketball history. He goes into his final season ranked third among active Division I players in career assists with 516. He broke Army’s all-time assist record as a junior and is the only cadet to ever eclipse 500 in his career. Additionally, he is Army’s single-season assist record holder and has broken the record in each of the past two seasons. As a scorer, he averages 10.8 points per game, is shooting 40 percent from the field and 34 percent from deep for his career. He has connected on 108 career 3-pointers. Funk has started in all 94 games since arriving at West Point as a freshman. He is one of just eight Patriot League players all-time to score over 1,000 points and tally over 500 assists in a career. He has averaged 172 assists per season and needs just 145 during his senior campaign to become the league’s all-time assists leader. The Warrington, Pennsylvania native was a Third Team All-Patriot League selection following the 2018-19 season. He has logged four career double-doubles and six double-digit assists outings. One of those double-doubles came on the road against No. 4 Duke in 2018-19 when he scored 12 points and dished out 10 assists. He has finished top-three on the team in scoring in all three years. Funk currently sits 35th in career points with 1,018.
