Tommy Scherr

Classroom

Scherr has a 3.22 grade point average. He is a chemical engineering major with a minor in mathematical sciences and will graduate in May, 2008 from the UD Chemical Engineering program which is consistently ranked in nationally in the Top 10 by USNews. Was a ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American and a two-time member of Colonial Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll. Has plans to enter medical school after graduation. He earned UD Miles Powell Jr. Engineering/Athletics Scholarships in 2006. Scherr is a three-time UD Dean’s List student. He earned a UD Undergraduate Research Fellowship in 2007. Spent time in the summer of 2006 working in the UD Undergraduate Research program on polymer thin films under Dr. Thomas Epps, III.

Character

The two-year team co-captain will serve again as a co-captain for the 2008 Delaware men’s lacrosse team. As the goalkeeper, Scherr is responsible for calling out much of the defensive signals during games and despite his diminutive 5-8 size, is a tough, aggressive player who will battle throughout the game. He is an extremely mature, polite person who has earned the respect of his teammates, is extremely well-liked, and is one of the team’s best media interviews. He earned the team’s UD Sportsmanship Award in both 2006 and 2007.

Community

Works with the UD Student Services for Athletes HENS program (Helping Each Newcomer Succeed) as a mentor. Is a UD Student Services for Athletes Tutor in Math and Chemistry. Has worked as a Chemical Engineering Department Ambassador for prospective undergraduate students.

Competition

Will be a third-year starter at goalkeeper in 2008 for Delaware lacrosse team….a strong All-Colonial Athletic Association and potential All-American candidate in 2008…named to CAA All-Tournament team in 2006 and 2007…Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens UD Athlete of the Week (May 14, 2007)...led team to CAA title and a berth in the NCAA semifinals in 2007 when he posted a .583 save pct. (14th in NCAA Div. I) and 7.81 goals against average (11th in NCAA)...for his career, has a record of 25-11 (No. 2 among active NCAA I goalkeepers for wins) , has posted 371 saves (No. 5 all-time at UD) and a 8.12 gaa (No. 1 all-time at UD).
