The Phenomenal Shaquem Griffin

by Jill Lee May 09, 2018 in Football

If you followed the NFL Draft this year, you undoubtedly heard about the one-handed linebacker from UCF who was drafted in the second round by the Seahawks. How can you NOT hear about that? It’s an extremely unique story. And (not to pat ourselves on the back, but…) we knew it was coming.

Last fall when our committee was reviewing Senior CLASS Award nominations for football, they came across one that caused everyone to pause. It was, of course, Shaquem Griffin—a first-team All-ACC… Continue Reading

Senior CLASS Award Year in Review

by Jill Lee June 29, 2017 in Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Football, Hockey, Lacrosse, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Softball, Volleyball

Every spring when the academic year comes to a close, we get a chance to look back on the “year that was” in the world of the Senior CLASS Award (SCA). It’s always inspiring to remember the student-athletes who were honored and recall what they’d done to deserve the honor.

This year was certainly one to remember for the SCA staff, as it featured several firsts in award history. We saw our first set of twins make it to the round of finalists when Minnesota volleyball stars Paige… Continue Reading

Foltz Receives Historic First Honorary Senior CLASS Award Nomination

by Jill Lee October 31, 2016 in Football

The email tugged at all of our heartstrings.

It came to the inbox of Senior CLASS Award Director Erik Miner in early September from Nebraska Assistant A.D. Keith Mann, who said he had a unique question about the SCA nomination process.

Earlier in the summer, Nebraska had endured one of the most tragic scenarios imaginable earlier in the summer when Sam Foltz, their first-string punter, had been killed in an automobile accident on his way back from a kicking camp in Wisconsin. As… Continue Reading

Hockey Candidates Share Common Link

by Brian Taylor February 15, 2016 in Hockey

Every season the Senior CLASS Award honors the commitment and success of those student-athletes who are on track to graduate and have exhausted all of their athletic eligibility. However, getting a glimpse of these athletes before their collegiate careers even begin does not happen often. It is even more rare to see the paths of multiple SCA candidates cross before they ever step foot on a college campus.

On the border of South Dakota and Iowa lies a town by the name of Sioux City. Home… Continue Reading

The Epitome of Senior CLASS

by Jill Lee January 11, 2016 in Football

It’s not often that an athlete is referred to as the “most important player in school history,” but when one is, it’s a good idea to take notice. This season, that’s what ESPN.com writer Alex Scarborough labeled Mississippi State senior quarterback Dak Prescott after he spent four years rewriting the school record books and restoring winning ways to Starkville.

Just before Prescott went out and led his team to a dominant victory in the 2015 Belk Bowl, it was announced that the… Continue Reading

Senior CLASS Goes Beyond the Stats and Grades

by Jill Lee March 11, 2015 in

Let’s be honest. The first things we usually look at when we read the bios of the Senior CLASS Award nominees are their stats and grade-point averages. What are they doing on the court or field, and how are they performing in the classroom? Undoubtedly, those are important categories—nonnegotiable, in fact. But if we skim over the middle two categories—character and community—we’re really missing out on the absolute best parts of these student-athletes.

One of the great things… Continue Reading

UC Irvine’s Andrew Morales sets good example for family

by Laurie Bollig June 20, 2014 in Baseball

When All-American pitcher Andrew Morales from the University of California, Irvine graduated earlier this month with a degree in public health policy, he became only the second member of his large extended family to earn a college degree.

When the Covina, California, native won the Senior CLASS Award earlier this month, he became the second Anteater in four years to win the nation’s most prestigious award for senior student-athletes. Former UC Irvine pitcher and current Anteater pitching… Continue Reading

Lacrosse and softball winners shine brightly in children’s eyes

by Laurie Bollig June 02, 2014 in Lacrosse

Shortly after the Senior CLASS Award winner in lacrosse was announced, ESPN writer Dana O’Neill congratulated Princeton’s Tom Schreiber in a very public way via her Twitter feed:

“keeping w lax tweets, belated congrats to @TomSchreiber26 on Senior CLASS award. Much deserved. Made a 10 yr old fan especially happy”

Based on O’Neill’s status as a mother and a sportswriter, it’s not difficult to assume the 10-year-old is her child. Her congratulatory note about Schreiber,… Continue Reading

2014 Football, Basketball Winners Exemplify 4 Cs

by Chris Haller April 29, 2014 in Men’s Basketball

The Senior CLASS Award is unlike any other award in NCAA Division I sports.  Contrary to most awards that only recognize a student’s performance on the court, their involvement in the community or their grade point average, the Senior CLASS Award honors these student-athletes in four areas of excellence equally.  The award is based on the individual’s academic standing, community involvement, their overall character and their production in competition.

It’s not always easy… Continue Reading
