James Otey

James Otey Finalist
School Position Major
Johnson C. Smith University Guard Sports Management

Otey has assumed the leadership role as the only returning senior in the backcourt. In his three seasons at JCSU, Otey has started 35 games. He has been an energetic, motivating team player prepared to perform in whatever role is assigned by the coaching staff. Otey began his collegiate career at Patrick Henry Community College. He overcame all academic obstacles for acceptance into Johnson C. Smith. Otey continues to balance athletics and academics en route to graduation. He volunteered his time and energy with the JCSU men’s basketball team to assist with a Habitat for Humanity Charlotte project. JCSU basketball painted the interior of a new Habitat home for a deserving family. The student-athletes had an opportunity to make a difference in the Charlotte community while having an enjoyable time. This was also a great team-building exercise for the students-athletes and staff; and a great way to start the new school year. Otey has also joined the team for the Beatties Ford Library reopening project. During the summer, Otey sacrifices some family time to volunteer as a counselor at the JCSU Summer Basketball Camps. Otey started in 19 of 28 games played during the 2010-11 season. He averaged 7.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He shot a team-high 85.7 percent from the free throw line and 40.4 percent from the field. Otey was third on the team is assists with 46. He is the last remaining guard from the 2009 CIAA Tournament championship team.
